Saloni Mahendro

Saloni Mahendro came to FIDM with a BS degree in Psychology from University of Toronto. With an interest in buying, merchandising, and trend forecasting, the Merchandise & Marketing program at FIDM was the perfect fit for her.

Tell us a bit about yourself:
I am a huge animal lover and could spend an entire day happily holed up in the library. In true Canadian fashion, I love hockey and ketchup chips, and Tim Hortons holds a very special place in my heart. I am constantly listening to music and one day I will master my beloved electric guitar. I love to shop, eat, and exercise (not necessarily in that order). My husband owns an Indian gastropub in Downtown Los Angeles. For all the foodies reading this, check out @BadmaashLA, and for all the Canadians reading this, we have poutine!

What are your proudest accomplishments so far?
Deciding to come back to school and do what I am meant to!

What made FIDM right for you?
I've known for quite some time that the fashion industry is where I want to be, but it was hard to pinpoint where I'd fit best. The Merchandise & Marketing Program seemed like it was tailor made for my interests (buying, trend forecasting, merchandising, etc.) and after meeting with Susan, FIDM was a no-brainer.

Describe your entrance project:
Think Vogue meets vintage. The store in my project is one that I can see myself owning in reality one day. The customer is classic, but always one step ahead of the rest. She is a well-educated urban sophisticate whose job is fueled by creativity and allows her to both inspire and be inspired. I believe that fashion is more than just what you wear and so I decided to include a lifestyle section called Vive by Workshop.

What are your career goals?
What I want most is to make fashion my business. Ultimately I'd like to be a buyer or trend forecaster for a luxury retailer, and then maybe one day open my own boutique.

What do you expect to learn at FIDM?
More than anything, I am looking forward to the tremendous contacts I will make while at FIDM. I am excited to be learning from professionals and want to know what their experience in the industry has taught them. I can't think of a better way to learn than from those who are already doing what I aspire to.
